Final Expense Leads: What to Look For and What to Avoid

Final ExpenseFebruary 5, 20265 min readBy TheInsuranceLeads.com

Final expense is a phone-first product with small premiums and fast decisions. That is exactly why lead quality matters so much: every wasted dial costs you a policy you could have written in the same fifteen minutes.

What to look for

  • Age 50 to 85. This is the core buying demographic. Leads outside the band are usually mis-sourced.
  • A burial or final expense request specifically. Generic "life insurance" forms convert far worse for FE than a form that mentioned funeral costs or leaving money for family.
  • Working phone numbers. Ask what percentage of records connect. Anything below 80 percent on fresh data is a red flag.
  • State filters. Carriers and approvals vary by state. Buy only where you are appointed.

What to avoid

  • Shared FE leads. Seniors who get five calls in one afternoon stop answering the phone entirely. You lose the lead and the vendor keeps reselling it.
  • Incentivized forms. A consumer who filled out a form to win a prize is not shopping for burial coverage.
  • Vendors with no age-based pricing. If a 6-month-old lead costs the same as a 2-week-old lead, you are overpaying for one of them.

Fresh vs aged final expense

Our FE leads are $1.50 under 24 hours, $1.00 under 7 days, and $0.50 under 30 days, with real-time priced on availability. The 30 to 60 day tier is $0.50, 60 to 90 is $0.40, and 90 to 180 is $0.20. Many FE telesales teams run a blend: a small batch of fresh leads for same-day closes, and a large aged file to keep every rep on the phone all day. The aged file often produces the better cost per issued policy because the competition has moved on.

Working the list

Seniors answer the phone at different hours than working-age consumers. Mid-morning and early afternoon local time outperform evenings. Keep the opener short, warm, and about them: "You asked about coverage to help with final expenses. I can tell you in two minutes what that would cost."
